VTAF, Vertical Tracking Angle on the Fly
VTA, Vertical Tracking Angle, is about getting the phonograph cartridge at the correct attitude so that the angle of the phonograph cartridge cantilever with the horizontal, and the angle of the stylus axis with the vertical, are optimal for best sound reproduction. Many phonograph tonearms allow the user to adjust VTA, but make it difficult to do. A few tonearms make adjustment of VTA easy, but add mechanical complexity that can interfere with getting the best sound.
The VTAF, Vertical Tracking Angle on the Fly, makes it easy to adjust VTA for best sound, and also mounts the tonearm in a manner that dampens residual vibrations of the tonearm assembly, preventing delayed vibrations from returning to the phono cartridge and smearing the sound.

Here is the VTAF for a Rega post mounted arm. Also shown is the Counterweight for the Common Man (CCM) for Rega tonearms. The finish is Lacquered Brass (clear protective lacquer over engine turned solid brass. Rotating the thin circular wheel raises and lowers the body of the tonearm, thereby changing the Vertical Tracking Angle (VTA) and the Stylus Rake Angle (SRA). VTAF units are available for most tonearm makes and models.
Here is the VTAF for a Rega Post mounted arm. The finish is Smokey Silver (clear protective lacquer over nickel plate over engine turned sold brass). The table is a Thorens TD124.
Here is the VTAF for a Thomas Schick tonearm on a graphite armboard.
Here is the VTAF included in the $1900 USD purchase price of a Pete Riggle Woody Universal Tonearm, which is adaptable to cartridges of all compliances. The table shown is a modified Acoustic Research unit. Current versions of the Woody Universal Tonearm are made without the lateral balance beam.
Brian Henrickson, Rega 880 tonearm on Rega P8 turntable:
Hi Pete, We are really enjoying your magnificent VTAF on My Rega P8. My turntable never sounded so good. Such a big improvement in tone and sound stage. The on-the-fly adjustability is a pleasure to use. Brian
